TPC Scottsdale – Champions Course

TPC Scottsdale – Champions Course

TPC Scottsdale is a Resort/Daily Fee facility offering 36 holes of championship golf. Designed by the team of Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, the Stadium and Champions courses opened for play in December 1986.   Both the Stadium and Champions courses serve the local resident and appeals to the resort guest visiting Scottsdale.

Operated by PGA TOUR Golf Course Properties Inc., the facility is located in the beautiful SonoranDesert on land owned by the Federal Bureau of Reclamation and leased by City of Scottsdale. An agreement with the prestigious Fairmont Scottsdale Princess Resort appropriately aligns the facility with a 5 Diamond Resort renowned for providing the utmost luxury in accommodations and service.

As the PGA TOUR stop with the largest crowds of any golf event in the world, the Waste Management Phoenix Open brings immeasurable attention and respect to the Stadium course. The few highlights which will go down in history were Tiger Wood’s hole-in-one on the par 3 #16 during the 1997 Phoenix Open, Andrew Magee’s hole-in-one on the par 4 #17 being the first one in PGA TOUR history, and Mark Calcavecchia’s PGA TOUR record breaking score of 28 under par in 2001. In its history, dating back to 1932, the Phoenix Open has raised more than $93.3 million ($93,358,203) for charities in Arizona.

Recently, the City of Scottsdale began an extensive renovation of TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium golf course and clubhouse on April 1, 2014. The golf course project, led by architect Tom Weiskopf, includes the relocation of four greens, resurfacing of all greens, reshaping and regrassing of all tee complexes, relocation and reshaping of all bunker complexes, replacement of cart paths, and re-landscaping of desert areas. The result is more aesthetically pleasing to resort guests and strategically more challenging to PGA TOUR players during the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Twenty years after its inception, the Desert Course was rebuilt in 2007 under the direction of golf course architect Randy Heckenkemper – who served as part of Tom Weiskopf’s original design team in 1987. The project was initiated by PGA TOUR Golf Course Properties in collaboration with the City of Scottsdale to elevate the course to PGA TOUR tournament quality as well as provide local residents with an outstanding amenity that complements the Club’s Stadium Course. Consistent with the quality of the new course and as a tribute to the many “champions” who have made contributions to the game of golf and to the community of Scottsdale, the course has been named after them.

The Champions course has hosted many events since it was rebuilt. A true testament to the course was when it served as the host of the first stage of qualifying school for the PGA TOUR in 2007 when the smoke from fires in California hindered play at the course that was supposed to host them. They came and played on the course before it was even open and was very impressed from that point on of what this course would offer. It also serves as home to the final stage of Qualifying School for the Champions Tour every other year.

In 2007, The TOUR Academy TPC Scottsdale was developed. The TOURAcademy offers an exceptional instruction facility along with a state-of-the-art game improvement facility features a private practice area, a putting and chipping green, practice bunkers and the finest diagnostic technologies. The facility also includes a comprehensive club fitting program. The TOUR Academy TPC Scottsdale has been designed with a variety of enhancements to create the perfect environment for improving your game while incorporating the natural beauty of the surrounding desert and allowing you to take advantage of the unique local flavor of Scottsdale’s extraordinary dining, shopping and world-class accommodations.
